Ex-Bredesen aide buys home aid firm

8/5/2010

Cura Partners LLC, a Nashville company recently created by former Deputy Governor Stuart Brunson, announced today that it has purchased the assets of non-medical home care provider Aid & Assist At Home Inc., based in Bristol, Tenn.

Terms of the purchase were not disclosed. It closed on July 1.

According to its website, Aid & Assist At Home offers homemaking, personal care, transportation and other services at home for individuals "with decreased sight or hearing, those recovering from major surgery, chronic medical conditions, Alzheimer's disease, or any other condition that could make everyday routines difficult."

The company has offices in Chattanooga, Jackson, Johnson City, Knoxville and Nashville. It has 46 full-time employees and more than 1,000 part-time caregivers.

Joining Brunson in the venture is David Coppeans, a former vice president at investment banking firm Avondale Partners. Coppeans will serve as the new company’s chief financial officer. Diane Price, who has served as president of Aid & Assist At Home since she co-founded the company in 2005, will maintain the role of president.

The announcement said Avenue Bank financed the transaction, with Senior Vice President Carol Titus handling the deal. Providing legal services were Charles Robert Bone and Trace Blankenship from the Nashville office of Bone McAllester Norton.

Brunson left the administration of Gov. Phil Bredesen 18 months ago. Before becoming deputy governor in late 2006, he had manged Bredesen's successful gubernatorial campaigns in 2002 and 2006.

After the 2008 election, when some observers thought Congressman Jim Cooper might join the cabinet of President Barack Obama, Brunson's was one of several names bandied about locally as a possible candidate to fill Cooper's 5th District Congressional seat.

Besides Aid & Assist At Home, his business interests include at least three other ventures. Memphis-based Blue Star Environmental Services handles commercial and industrial liquid waste. Brunson Publishing Co. owns niche publications that cover fields as diverse as bird hunting, sermon preparation and shipping regulation. And Sharetree Screening Solutions runs background checks for employers and landlords.
